Kelly’s Ace
They took the blue roan mares, the smart ones with the coyote blood, from the Pine Ridge herds that at one time belonged to the Hunkpapa chief, Sitting Bull. Those horses knew the cold and the hard ground.
At the Table Rock, they brought them to the stallions from Cranfills Gap, good hard-running studs named Kelly's Ace and Johnny Ringo. It was a good mating.
The idea was a horse that was fast, smart, and would not quit. They came out blue roan Appaloosas. They had the dark iron color mixed with white, and the spots on their hips. They bred them to be strong, to work the land and the cattle, and dominate the show ring.
And they did.

Boy Scouts from my dad’s pack. They traveled and put on shows as plains Indians. Here “kidnaping a hostage.”
